Dr Paula Dupuy has pursued a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of canine lameness and sporting injuries. After years in equine practice managing complex lameness issues, she recognized a significant need for similar specialized care in canine patients. Inspired by the existing canine athletes at Troy Animal Hospital, Dr Paula studied at Chi University in Florida where she completed her CCRV certification, Certified Canine Rehabilitation Veterinarian.

Building on an extensive background in musculoskeletal ultrasound for equine limbs, Dr Paula attended a specialized canine workshop with the Canapp Sports Medicine Group. This advanced imaging has since become a vital tool in her practice for accurately diagnosing canine soft tissue injuries.

Once the cause of lameness is diagnosed, treatment modalities can include photobiomodulation therapy, extracorporeal shock wave treatment and mesotherapy. Direct treatment of joints and injuries with orthobiologics,  anti-inflammatory therapies or other innovative products provide more options for improved patient comfort and performance.

What to Expect

  • Diagnostics

The goal of a sport and lameness consultation is to determine the cause of your dog's lameness.  This will involve reviewing videos of your dog's gait taken at home, a thorough review of previous history and comprehensive musculoskeletal and neurologic examinations.   In addition, we utilize thermal imaging, radiography and musculoskeletal ultrasound to help reach our diagnosis.

  • Treatment

Once a diagnosis is found, we will formulate an appropriate treatment plan.  We will often use a combination of modalities over several visits. Our treatment plans may utilize the following modalities and methods:

Photobiomodulation (therapeutic laser)

Focused light therapy at wavelengths that induce cellular activity to reduce inflammation and to promote healing

Orthobiologics & Synthetic Joint Therapies

Therapy can be applied directly to joints and other connective tissue to use the body's own healing properties for tissue repair and to decrease inflammation.  Synthetic substances are also available that promote joint health and act as lubricating and/or cushioning agents.

Advice on the appropriate and effective use of nutraceuticals and supplements.

Mesotherapy

Intradermal application of pharmaceuticals and/or bioactive substances for localized pain relief.

ESWT (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy)

Application of sound energy to injured tissue to break up scar tissue, provide pain relief and to promote healing
